The smallest and least populated nation in South America, Suriname is little known outside its immediate neighbours and the Netherlands where there is a significant population of Surinamese. Suriname has levels of safety and security that rank it much higher than most other South American nations. Although English is not an official language, it is widely spoken throughout the Surinamese territory.
Suriname has been a destination of choice for artisanal miners for decades, predominantly Brazilian. However, there are also significant large gold deposits currently operated by global mining companies including Rosebel (Zijin Mining) and Merian (Newmont). The Marowijne Greenstone Belt has to date seen the majority of exploration focus and discoveries.
Suriname is under-explored with regards to gold and bauxite exploration and has seen very limited exploration for other minerals allowing substantial opportunities for new discoveries. Along with a relatively stable business environment and improving stability, Suriname is seen as a low risk jurisdiction.
